Abstract

The term ‘sculpitecture’ identifies a hybrid activity originating from two proud disciplines. The prominent sculptor Anthony Caro was one of the first practitioners to use this term to best describes the notion of the ‘enclosed’ and ‘object’ to be one and the same. This paper uses the term to represent the notion of ‘place’ as a concept that is both fixed and unfixed that traverses between the past and present. Referencing old mid-western architecture that once represented rural communities and their particular way of life, this presentation follows the motivations and ideas that underpinned the design and creation of an outdoor public artwork for a sculpture park in Minnesota, where the author was artist-in-residence. As such, this presentation argues that both entropy and nostalgia can exhibit profound meanings above and beyond sentimental yearnings as well as providing rich opportunities for the community to become engaged in through form and structure.
