Abstract

The purpose of this study was (a) to determine if students are being prepared by their educational programs for an entry level position in athletic training; (b) to examine which are areas of deficiency in each of the five domains of athletic training; and (c) to determine what influence the program type, curriculum or internship, has upon the professional preparedness of those students. The results of the study indicated that students were being adequately prepared by their athletic training educational programs and clinical/field experiences for entry-level employment. Entry-level employed certified athletic trainers from curriculum athletic training education programs were significantly different (P < .05), than the internship athletic training educated graduates in regard to perceived preparedness. Entry-level employed certified athletic trainers were significantly different (P < .05), as to perceived preparation in the athletic training domains of rehabilitation and reconditioning of athletic injuries, health care administration, and professional development and responsibility.
