Abstract

The framework of architecture is not simply a visible reality. There is an invisible, metaphysical, or ritualistic order in architecture one constructed by the culture's mythology through its poetic memories and imagination. Our memories of the past are embedded in architecture, creating a fourth dimension of time and space as we travel back home in our daydreams. The archetypes can be viewed from various angles. The presence of archetypes in architectural designs is generally obvious in two groups. In the first group designs are mostly similar to the archetypes with some differences in details and in the second group designers consciously have tried to avoid the archetypes, but due to strong struggle of their unconsciousness, archetypes are involved in the designs. The second group designs are more obvious in contemporary architecture. In this paper we review the presence of archetypes in architecture which are based on designer’s unconsciousness and they are not a copy of local designs, imitation, or post modern designs. First, we review presence of global archetypes, such as arch and dome and also the cosmic spiral, column, mountain and, tree in some of worldwide designs and their evolution. Then some local archetypes such as Igloo, Stupa, Yurt, Tent, Wigwam, and etc. which are related to global archetypes in some different countries are reviewed and their influences on contemporary architecture are evaluated. Finally, some fundamental principles based on global archetypes are presented to design aesthetic and popular architecture projects for all times.
