Abstract

E-Learning systems have traditionally been developed for notebook and desktop computers through software applications or websites. Mobile phones often lack the processing power of notebooks or desktop computers, and as a result very few accommodations have been made for ubiquitous learning on mobile phones and portable devices. However, the ability to provide a comprehensive ubiquitous learning environment on the mobile phone platform will offer powerful collaborative and interactive learning opportunities. In the spirit of creating a truly ubiquitous environment, there is a need to work with existing technologies and hardware limitations to bring comprehensive ubiquitous learning environments onto the mobile phone. Thus, the main objective of this research work is to develop an interactive mobile learning environment, including the ability to facilitate multi-user web conferencing and collaborative team work. The developed prototype system facilitates the exchange of information and real-time voice and video communications among a large number of participants. Also, the system has successfully connected participants internationally and in small classroom environments. The development efforts represent a deep push into unlocking the mobile phone platform for ubiquitous learning. The paper discusses these technological challenges in details and offers solutions to some of the encountered problems.
