Abstract

South Korea became the fifth country in the world that opened a high-speed railway in April 2004 followed by France, Germany, Japan and Spain. Accordingly, it has been necessary to make new changes in railway stations. Previous railway stations have been used only for the entraining and detraining places. However, according to their complexity and large scale, recent high-speed railway stations have become a place of important industrial culture exchange and one of the places representing the local areas, thus being transformed into a place in charge of various additional functions. In general, several construction conditions are required for building safe, convenient and pleasant high-speed train stations. The composition of each space should be clear so as for the passengers using the high-speed railway to easily recognize the space and conveniently use it. Accordingly, it is necessary for high-speed railway stations to have effective arrangement in traffic line and to have a spatial composition, in which one can easily find the place that they want to go. For such evaluation towards passenger facilities within high-speed railway station, this research studied by utilizing a method to analyze spatial structure; the method was a VGA(Visibility Graph Analysis, Turner, VR centre, UCL) of which objectivity had been proved. The measures related to visibility of space was calculated and determined through the use of the Depthmap V10.08 application. By doing so, it attempted to evaluate the way of how the spatial composition of actual high-speed railway stations in South Korea has been made and the problems of spatial recognition, according to visibility and the approachability of various passenger facilities. It is expected in the future that this study will be utilized in a way that it can enhance the approachability of users when planning high-speed railway station.
