Abstract

Doorway designs called rangoli form a longstanding practice in India and have been studied extensively by scholars. However, there is a paucity of study of significant newer trends. One of the most notable of such trends is the Sanskaar Bharati rangoli design, which employs this cultural form for various festivals and other auspicious occasions. This exploratory essay addresses the gap in the study of this practice and presents an overview of the Sanskaar Bharati rangoli from the perspective of elements and principles of design. The four areas this study explores are: a) the structure and aims of Sanskaar Bharati, b) symbols and the pedagogy to transmit them, c) the achievements and impact of this design, and d) the reasons for its popularity. This study indicates the preservation of Indian values and creation of a feeling of togetherness fostered through the Sanskaar Bharati rangoli designs.
