Abstract

This article traces the historical development from modernism’s critique of the traditional authoritarian museum to the inclusive museum practices of today, arguing that the development often has not led to freedom, democracy, equality, and inclusion in the museum but rather to a semblance of the aforementioned notions. From an examination of current inclusive practices and their failings, the article discusses the possibility of furthering the museum as a democratic institution.
