Abstract

The arts and architecture have long struggled to define their exact relationship with technology. New technologies challenge their established traditions and modes of thought, but at the same time expand possibilities of expression and form. Concurrently, these disciplines constantly seek to exemplify the condition of their time through metaphor, symbols, myths and narratives. This paper explores the intersection of technology and mythology within society from the context of the Arts and Architecture. In an era where technology acts as self-sustaining system, questions are raised whether it is advanced in order to create novel myths or whether there are certain needs for new symbols that warrant the growth of technology. It is argued that recent shifts in the fields of Architecture and the Arts exemplify the interplay between technology and symbolism, science and mythology. Furthermore, the paper will seek to define the rules that govern these relationships through the filter of these two fields.
