Abstract

Sustainability is a complex concept comprised of social, environmental, and economic paradigms that challenges traditional norms of organisational practice. Organisations are tackling ever-increasing difficulties in transforming themselves into sustainable entities. Moreover, there is a lack of generally accepted sustainability principles that is supported by most organisational stakeholders, and a pattern-oriented methodology that is entirely backed by organisational resources, in particular information systems. In this paper, we propose a technology-neutral multi-level sustainability business transformation (SBT) roadmap that supports business in maintaining a consistent process of converting existing business operations into those that are sustainable. The roadmap consists of discover and learn, strategise, design, transform, monitor and control phases. It supports the entire sustainability transformation life cycle from the initial conceptualisation of the sustainability issues to their final implementation, monitoring and reporting.
