Abstract

By many accounts, the influence of postmodernism is fading if not past. There is a new stress on the importance of voice, of speaking in the first person, on the grasping of values to live by. Not forgetting the many democratizing influences of postmodernism this paper explores some of the ways in which art education is being or might be reshaped in response to a changing zeitgeist. The paper considers a number of closely related topics influencing curriculum such as the defining of art, art as understanding, voice, art and the social, art and nature, art history, aesthetics, and concludes with reflections on the nature of art education.
