Abstract

Health care students must do the following work in their study time: description or presentation of a study themes; data processing which usually follows the description or presentation (course papers, bachelor work etc.). Basic and advanced level ECDL abilities are necessary for doing study work, as well as acquiring additional tools of MS Excel for data analysis. It is also preferable for students to acquire skill with some statistical computer programs, for example, SPSS. In order that students could successfully learn the necessary ICT skills, it is advisable to work not only in the lessons of informatics study courses, but also outside the lessons. A survey of the data base of non–sensitive patients and other respondents, as well as tables and links to professional standards can be useful for this aim. The authors have just now produced a demonstration version. Recommendations on learning styles are provided for mastering ICT skills and, at the same time, still having additional theoretical material needed for other study courses. Tests for examinations are also provided. Uniform patients’ data system is going to be introduced into Latvia in future. The authors think that students would better learn informatics study courses with non-sensitive patients’ data. Therefore we must offer an access to such a kind of data.
