Week 5 Journal

I found the definition and explanation of the concept of ethnography to be interesting- that it isn't just the act of observation, but observing without bias. While coming into a community with the unique persepectives and experiences of an outsider can be overwhelmingly beneficial, it is important to ensure that the needs and desires of the community are being listened to and respected.

One aspect that I feel like the lecture didn't address was observing what a healthcare system doesn't need. If a piece of equipment or type of supply is sitting unused, then the resources used to acquire and/or maintain those items could be better applied elsewhere. Similarly, if a certain material is consistenly being modified by providers (maybe part of a brace gets cut off because it's always in the way), then that could be an easy modification.
