The Competitive Politics of Labeling Genetically Modified Foods, Now Bioengineered Foods.” In Food Labeling Politics and Policy in the United States
Labeling of genetically-modified foods has become a salient issue in many states, driven by the anti-GMO movement and pro-organic politics, and policy entrepreneurship. Across decision-making venues, two distinct advocacy coalitions with environmental and industry orientations struggled over genetically-modified (GM) food labeling. The history of their competitive venue shopping reflects policy wins and losses for each side. Narrative policy analysis of groups’ competitive framing of the GM labeling problem and preferred solutions across and within venues illuminates the policy development that extended national labeling authority and undid nascent state GM labeling laws.
