A Deeper Look at Disease Transmission & Bio-Security

Learning Objectives

In this module, we'll focus on:

• Understanding the spread of infectious diseases in various types of at-risk populations and demonstrate the spread of such diseases considering R0 and incubation period.
• Explaining what herd immunity is, and calculate the fraction of immune individuals to prevent an epidemic.
• Listing components of herd biosecurity and discuss the pros and cons of each component.
• Being able to use a partial budget to estimate ballpark profitability and return for implementing a biosecurity practice.

How long is this module?

• Two videos run for a total of 32 minutes of viewing.
• A learning module from Texas A&M University allows you to engage with a scenario-based environment related to African Swine Fever.
• There are 15 required readings plus four resources to become familiar with.
• Assessments: create one update (400 words plus at least one multi-modal element) and respond to at least two other student's updates to further the discussion (at least 200 words each).
• Though not required, additional materials can be found in the "Optional Videos and Readings Module" for further study.
