Ubiquitous learning Concept: Web 2.0-based workplace e-learning through Integrated E-Learning System

Definition: Web 2.0-based workplace e-learning through Integrated E-Learning System is a learning approach [… to support complex learning and the development of professional competencies. These also stress the collaborative construction of knowledge through active learning (“social constructivism”) and the importance of higher-order skills such as problem solving, learning strategies and self-regulation. Moreover, flexibility is being increased by making education less dependent on time and place, for example ‘just-in-time’ learning (see Goodyear, 1998) and by making personalized learning routes available for individual students. This is known as ‘just for me’ education. Finally, there is an ongoing integration of learning and working in order to close the gap between formal education and professional practice and to improve the transfer of acquired skills, knowledge and attitudes from schools to the workplace.]1 This concept emphasizes the integration of cloud computing, mobile learning, informal networks, virtual schools, collaborative workspaces, and Web 2.0 tools, enabling learners to acquire knowledge and skills anytime, anywhere, and on any device.

Example in Practice: The learning concept is realized through an online Workers’ Compensation Board members portal that integrates several key components to enhance safety awareness and practices. Firstly, a cloud-based safety resource hub, hosting an extensive repository of safety videos, interactive simulations, and case studies spanning diverse topics like hazard identification and ergonomic practices. This hub is accessible via mobile device, ensuring workers to receive timely notifications, encouraging engagement with quick safety refresher modules covering fall prevention, proper lifting techniques, and personal protective equipment. There is also an online peer network connects workers from different sectors, enabling the exchange of personal experiences, safety concerns, and collaborative solutions to shared challenges. Within the hub, members have access to a learning management system (LMS), it strengthens the concept by monitoring workers' involvement in safety workshops, certifications, and enhancement projects, contributing to their professional growth and ensuring compliance with safety regulations. As a learning module within the LMS, members can immerse themselves in a virtual safety school enabling them to practice emergency response drills, hazard recognition, and risk assessment scenarios. An available Wikipedia-style collaboration forum empowers workers to actively contribute, engaging in discussions, sharing successful safety initiatives, and seeking expert advice to address specific safety issues. By merging cloud computing, mobile learning, informal networks, virtual schools, collaborative workspaces, and Web 2.0 tools, workers engage in continuous learning, collaborate with peers and experts, and contribute to a culture of safety awareness and improvement.
