Just wondering what the difference is between clicking on "Updates" versus "Activity Stream" in the drop down menu. I kind of don't see the real point in distinguishing those two things. Not complaining, just trying to let you know how my brain is working and understand what you are trying to design. Thanks!

Activity stream is a summary of all events occurring in the community, including (as well as updates) publications, new members joining etc. In the activity stream, the updates only appear in shorter, summary form.
