Wk 2 reflection: the ubiquitous academic
One of the mantras of online delivery is that it's a time and location to fit in with the lives of our learners. This ubiquitous learning is also a benefit for staff, who with portfolio careers, can 'fit in' academia alongside other activities in their career and personal life.
Ubiquitous learning concepts: the 'internet of things'
I was intrigued by this concept as it sounded like something fantastical even though I had never come across it before. I dutifully 'googled' it and came across three websites that referred to IoT:
http://whatis.techtarget.com/definition/Internet-of-Things
http://www.theinternetofthings.eu/
http://www.techopedia.com/definition/28247/internet-of-things-iot
The Techopedia site says this about IoT: 'The Internet of things is a difficult concept to define precisely'. Based on my reading of the descriptions presented on these three websites, my interpretation and attempt at a definition follows.
We are moving into a world where a number of everyday objects like phones, computers, in-car navigation systems, personal health monitoring systems etc. are connected to the internet and have a unique ID. As more and more everyday objects are linked together via the internet, we see the emergence of a new omniscient and omnipresent being, the 'internet of things'. This new being is associated with an immediate 'knowing' of all of it's parts. In a way, it reminds me of the Borg (Star Trek reference: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Borg_(Star_Trek) ).
Is my interpretation correct?
