Visual Learning

Visual Learning has been defined as a learning style in which a learner utilizes graphs, charts, maps and diagrams. It is one of the three basics of learning styles apart from kinesthetic and auditory learning. In a simple term, visual learning is learning by seeing. Visual learners make use of their observation to create a mental imagery to learn using various visual items in their learning environment. Visual learning is one of the Multiple Intelligence proposed by Howard Gardner. Learners in this style understand better when an idea or principle is explained using pictures, charts and diagrams. Learning using videos can also be included as a part of visual learning. It’s not mandatory that a visual learner has to have something physical in view; they can visualize the information in their mind and remember it. A visual learner:

Can remember what they read and write.
They can remember lessons through pictorial representation, charts and maps well.
They make use of colors to highlight important information.
They associate ideas with images.
They can easily process information given in graphs, diagrams and remember it.
They excel in visual art, architecture, photography, designing and navigation.

Learning when associated with images and videos become easy to understand, remember and recollect. At any level of learning be it kindergarten or professional courses, visual learning proves to be an effective mode. This type of learning not only promotes knowledge synthesis but also creativity amongst learners.
