Informal Learning-A new approach towards learning

Informal learning relates to learning that takes place outside a formal and organized classroom. There are many forms of informal learning such as watching videos, playing games, reading articles, self-study, participating in discussion forums, chat rooms, group activities, and many more. It is self-directed and experiential kind of learning.

Informal learning is an ongoing process and can take place life-long. It does not necessarily take place in a traditional formal classroom, does not have any specific rules and regulations, syllabus, goals and objectives or planned learning trackers. It is mostly unplanned and can take place at anytime and anywhere. As we all are aware that this is an era of technology where information and knowledge are at our finger tips. For example, when we are reading any book or an article and come across any word or phrase whose meaning we don’t understand, we Google it on our mobiles or tabs. Here learning took place spontaneously and in an unplanned manner.

Informal learning is beyond the limitations of schools, colleges, universities etc. We can learn on our own through platforms like social media, projects, debating communities, reading groups etc. Also known as experiential learning, we learn through our daily experiences. We teach ourselves by participating in activities, listening to speakers, attending seminars etc.

Informal learning is beneficial in many ways. It is stress free. We are not under the performance pressure of grading system or anticipate scores. It is self-paced and can be enjoyable and fun. It is intuitive and encourages curiosity. We can say that learning in this approach arises from our interest, participation in activities and curiosity. Many institutes and organizations are also adopting this approach along with the curriculum to reach all kinds of learners. This will not only help in extended learning but also assist in performance of the individual learners.
