Ubiquitous Learning and Instructional Technologies MOOC’s Updates

Discussion Forum: Optional Update #2

Comment: One stand-out idea was that of social and cultural representation in online spaces. Teachers, particularly those working in K-12 settings, have been concerned about issues of cultural responsiveness in their classroom. I think the ideas put forward by Dr. Mayo parallels some of the ideas of cultural responsiveness. I agree that avatars should be representational and reflective of the identity of the person. In an online educational setting such as a Learning Management System, learners can customize their space to their liking, upload their own photos or pictures that they feel represent them the most. I think beyond simple online space customization, there should be flexibility in assignments that would allow each individual to bring in their own cultural experiences and share with others. For example, a class on making infographics could ask students to design an infographic about their cultures.
