Workshop Presentation
Tony Monahan,  Lampeto Efthymiou

In our increasingly interdependent, globalized world, it is vital that our students are aware and conversant in issues of global concern, and have a heightened sense of consciousness regarding diverse cultures. This session introduces an interdisciplinary Global Participation Program designed for student social transformation through online learning. Our program strives to promote engaged knowledge and responsible action; and for our participants to become future leaders who are responsible global citizens, who can successfully navigate the complex interdependent society of the 21st century, and contribute to improving the common global welfare of our planet and its inhabitants. The Global Participation program helps shape our students into global citizens through the introduction and practice of: Transformational Empathy, Active listening, Intercultural Communication, and Global Citizenship Awareness. This training is consistent with preparation programs for international participation in the Global Diversity Learning High Impact Practice (GDL) and has been a catalyst for: transformative learning, engagement of ideas, understanding issues from multiple perspectives, developing cross-cultural communication and problem-solving skills, promoting peace and understanding of all people and cultures, as well as augmented academic success and personal growth amongst our participants. The Global Participation program can be applied to international study abroad preparation programs, whether on site or online. The session will include an extensive breakdown of the program components, an interactive video session, participant discussion, and a question and answer forum.

Designing Effective Teaching and Significant Learning: A Blueprint for Student Success View Digital Media

Workshop Presentation
Zala Fashant

Faculty and instructional designers realize the importance of delivering courses with a clear, 20/20 focus. Many faculty have had little formal experience in designing courses to deliver significant learning. With the COVID-19 virus, the need for dual course delivery is essential. Even after the pandemic, other environmental challenges will force courses to change delivery modes quickly and effectively. Now, student success, retention, and completion is greater than ever, participants will examine how course design achieves these goals. Designing the framework and pedagogy necessary to align outcomes, assessments and activities, plan communication, integrate technology and analyze elements to deliver significant learning both in class and online. Insights from the Accelerated Teaching Online Institute which has helped over 300 faculty redesign courses will be shared. The time to plan and design for tomorrow is today. Participants will be able to use an integrated course design model to improve teaching and significant learning by: 1. Planning for course situational factors and pedagogical challenges, 2. Aligning course outcomes, assessments and learning activities, and 3. Designing courses to include communication to students, accessible content materials and learning technology integration through hands-on planning materials. The Cycle of Course Design will serve as the strategic framework for this session. Participants will walk away with strategies and resources to improve their own courses and a model to redesign courses at their institution.
