Applying Participatory Approach in Assessing and Cocreating Organizational Culture: Egyptian NGO as a Case Study

Abstract

The paper outlines the applied methods to assess the current organizational culture and cocreates the future culture using a participatory approach. Several lessons learnt were extracted; (1) the importance of leadership alignment on the employees’ involvement in creating and implementing the culture, (2) the importance of applying both quantitative and qualitative methods backed up by case studies and stories, (3) the importance of including the results in the format of “first voice” to enable leadership to sense the real situation and the urgency of certain actions, (4) the importance of assessing certain organizational developmental aspects beside organizational culture (5) the importance of creating internal structure to implement the suggested actions (6) the importance of categorizing suggested actions into immediate, quick wins and long structural changes, (7) the importance of articulating clear, simple, actionable behaviors for each future value.
