Building Workplaces Where People Want to Work: Making Difference Count View Digital Media

Innovation Case Studies
Sandra Healy,  Mary White

In 2016 a team of Organisational Psychologists and Diversity and Inclusion experts set out to solve a problem; how to measure workplace culture, diversity and inclusion using science and technology. After four years in R&D at Dublin City University, Ireland - backed by Enterprise Ireland - the team spun-out inclusio in 2020. inclusio is a science-based, data-led diversity and inclusion platform, designed to measure and enhance individual sense of belonging within organisations. inclusio's mission is to 'Make Difference Count' by embracing demands of future generations and setting new industry benchmarks. inclusio collaborates with academic experts in many universities globally, using their scientific insights to advance the world of research in organisational psychology, focusing on areas such as, Neurodiversity, Inclusion, Psychological Safety and Trust. Local context and cultural nuances make it difficult for global companies to implement meaningful diversity and inclusion programmes and initiatives regionally. The complexity of GDPR and local data privacy laws makes it difficult for organisations to comply with legislation on equality monitoring and reporting. Employees expect employers to value their difference, provide psychologically safe workplaces, where their rights are protected. inclusio provides a safe and confidential way for employees to be part of the change they want to see in their organisations by combining technology, psychology and AI, to help organisations chart and track a path for culture change.

Intervening as an Ally: Case Studies of Good Intentions Gone Wrong View Digital Media

Serilda Summers-McGee

Many organizations that tout a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion struggle with realizing the outcomes they are striving towards. A culture of belonging is built through the many small moments that happen daily across the organization. While the actions of a few can set a vision, inspire disruption, and mobilize actions in others, it is the daily communications and actions of many that make a difference. Equity and inclusion can only be realized when they are part of culture–and specifically, when there is a culture of allyship. This session explores what allyship is and how to build and maintain a culture of allyship through an examination of the successes and learnings from real situations. Participants learn how being an ally in the workplace promotes an inclusive culture and equitable outcomes; identify approaches to overcome challenges of allyship; understand the challenges of intervening as an ally and how to adapt your approach; and learn how to adapt your allyship to meet the needs of different situations.

To further advance of the efforts of the Diversity and Inclusion Taskforce, a speaker series was established to give students in Mental Health Counseling, Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Physician Assistant and Speech and Language Pathology programs an opportunity to hear and learn from the voices of experience. Speakers included their experiences advocating for DEI as well as their personal challenges with access and health care. For example, one speaker was a pioneering professional who promoted greater understanding of the intersections of race, gender, sexual orientation and social marginalization in psychotherapy paradigms and practice for over forty years. Another sits on the New York Disaster Interfaith Service and worked with Visiting Nurse Services. The lived-experience stories of each speaker gave students a unique opportunity to learn from experts and empathize with their challenges galvanizing them to take an active part in closing the healthcare gap. This presentation explains the process of establishing the series, its strategic goals, and its impact.
