Human Culture and Traditions on Canvas

Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Jovita Punzalan

When the Spanish colonization took place in the Philippine archipelago for more than three centuries particularly in the province of Bulacan several pre-colonial cultures and way of life were gradually disappeared. The paper identifies which Filipino culture and traditions were fading over the course of time that can only be seen on canvas. In order to know and understand comprehensively, mixed methods research that includes archival investigations, observation, focus-group-discussion, and face-to-face interviews were applied. The results of the study show that giving respect to the elders through hand gestures; “bayanihan” or extending hands to the need of others; traditional dances during festivals and thanksgiving; the culture of healing through folk healers and shamanism; and the like. The results infer that human culture and traditions of Filipino people that can only be seen in canvas may diminish and ease off if revival and sustainability do not occur.
