Yeonwoo Kim is a PhD student in the Steve Hicks School of Social Work, The University of Texas at Austin. Kim’s research centers on identifying social determinants associated with physical and mental health and educational achievement among children, especially from low-income families. Specifically, her research examines the effect of neighborhood economic context and discrimination on children and suggests research-based interventions, an approach that aims to develop the children’s human capital and to enhance physical and mental health through facilitating family functioning and community support.
Yeonwoo has worked at a National Institution in South Korea, researching family and child welfare. Using national representative data sets, she authored a peer-reviewed article on the relationship between change in family structure and child achievement, and she has co-authored a number of research books and articles in peer reviewed journals. Kim currently works with professors Catherine Cubbin, Esther J. Calzada, Yolanda Padilla, and Diana DiNitto an articles examining factors of health and education among at-risk children. Kim is a recipient of the 2017-2018 Graduate School Named Continuing Fellowship. She has a National Certification of 1st Grade Social Worker in South Korea, and is also a member of the Korea Association of Social Workers, South Korea.
