Dr. McMahan serves as the Dean of the Chapel, assistant professor in the College of Liberal Arts and Director of Mercer On Mission for Mercer University in Macon, Georgia, USA. Mercer On Mission is a high-impact service-learning program that has been endorsed by US presidents, Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton, for the contributions that it is making around the world. Similar support was offered by Vietnam's former Prime Minister, Nguyen Xuan Phuc, who said that Mercer On Mission was the best NGO working in Vietnam. Since founding the program in 2007, Dr. McMahan has overseen the growth of this program which began just with 38 students and 6 faculty. In 2019, MOM sent out 270 students and 45 faculty from a wide array of disciplines to engage in humanitarian relief and community development projects. In Vietnam, our team fit over 1,200 amputees with our Mercer-designed and manufactured prosthetic legs and hands. We installed Mercury Capture Systems in Guyana that recapture 99% of the mercury emissions emitted during refinement. MOM teams also engaged in clean water projects, education programs, medical clinics, refugee training and cross-cultural community-building projects. Dr. McMahan teaches global development and other courses in the College of Liberal Arts. He has been at Mercer since 2005.
