Update 2 A New Educational Technology

I find it quite interesting to see the ways in which teachers go over and beyond to reach students. With social media and other outside influences, capturing their attention has to be a challenge. The Boys & Girls Club is also very motivated in finding new ways to develop youth. This is not your average afterschool program. Children are learning dance, art, videography, and acting. Students come directly after school and I can imagine that recapturing their attention can be challenging to the instructor. I found online a program called Day 2 Day, wherein children had the opportunity to create art to be displayed and auctioned off via a silent auction. Each child recorded what their artwork meant.and recorded what their day to day experiences entail. The setting takes place in a real art studio, which was a great way to allow children to explore a real world setting, opposed to the gym room at their school.

The money raised went to support continued services for the Boys and Girls Club. Not only was this fun event, but children have the opportunity to have a voice.  Listening to the interviews, I was impressed to hear that many students were forward thinking and some even shared the struggles of being a youth today. This is quite different from my art class from when I was a child over 45 years ago. My art class consisted of paper glue, tape, crayons, and a desk. There was no walking around. There was no expressing myself verbally. It was a structured class. The Boys and Girls Club seem to hit a home run with this program, as it was well attended and even received a newspaper article referencing it. What an excellent way to capture the minds of students, increase their interest in art, and show them a world outside of four walls.
