Update 3: Active Knowledge Making & the WAY program

Not all high school students find success in education in the traditional high school setting. Often called “alternative” schools, many students are seeking a more personalized approach to learning online. One such program is the WAY program. This The WAY program is an online personalized learning program that prides itself on (c)(3) non-profit organization that partners with school districts and public charter school programs, enabling students that struggle within the traditional learning environment to gain the self-esteem, independence, and academic foundation needed for success in college and beyond.

All of the WAY program schools utilize a combination of online and in-person attendance for students. Students must complete a certain number of hours of work for a certain number of days per week.

The program model follows a type of Active Knowledge Making called Project-based Learning. The WAY program involves a learning style where students learn through exploring real-world problems. Here learners are not merely gaining informationas consumers of knowledge. Although students learn through many of the traditional venues such as online and offline reading of books, conducting experiments, collaborating with others and watching instructional videos, here students become producers of knowledge as engaged learners.
