Update 2: Purdue's Learning Communities

Update 2 – Ubiquitous learning

Purdue University offers an interesting added learning environment not restricted by classroom structure or rigid formats. Learning Communities are offered for its’ enrolled students. These are technically courses within academic majors or programs of interests for those admitted to Purdue. The mission of the Learning Community (LC) is to enhance a student’s learning opportunities. It also provides a great vehicle for students to connect with other students from many different academic backgrounds that share a common interest. Purdue offers several different LC’s, each with their own eligibility requirements and associated courses.

One LC offered at Purdue is for those interested in public health education. The LC dedicated to this topic seeks to enhance a student’s exposure to ways in which communication and public speech inform and influence health and health-related decisions. Anyone with an interest in health and/or communication can join so long as they take a specific public speaking course related to public health. The LC will provide real-life experiences in public speaking on health-related issues, both on and off campus and in both social and academic environments. This unique learning environment allows students to gain good communication skills and practice educating on public health topics.

While any Purdue student can participate in the LCs, there is a limitation. Most, if not all, LCs have a residency requirement. This means students must live either on campus or nearby. This means online or distance learning students cannot take advantage of this unique educational forum.
