Eric Amponsah’s Updates

Week 1 assignment

I work for Ghana Health Service in the Kwahu East District in Ghana. my work consist of undertake effective surveillance, forecast and control of diseases of public health importance, outbreaks, emerging and re-emerging threats and pandemics including immunization.

Equity and coverage. Equity is equal distribution of resources like antigens, vaccine carriers, diluents and others materials needed to provide vaccination to all Hospitals or Clinics for the staff to provide quality vaccinations. Irrespective of geographical location or financial background all must get the same services. Urban or remote communities must have equal services. Coverage is the target indicators or estimated number of children to be vaccinated at a period mostly for one year and can be divided into half year, quarter, monthly, weekly or even days. The number of children reach and provided with services is it evenly distributed to both rich and poor or urban and remote village. When the services is only focuses at urban or for only the rich, then the coverage is not equitable.

Most likely to be relevant and useful to help me improve this situation is working together and integration. This is because working together helps to reduce cost ( improve system efficiency), it motivate caregivers to attend immunization sessions, it increases demand through cross- promotion, improved user satisfaction thus able to meet multiple health needs of the patient, it increases coverage of new interventions. All the above mentioned leads to a positive direction.

What can be done to improve coverage are; health staff must always adhere to time discussed with community members or caregivers. They will not wait for several hours for immunization team and when this does not occurs, they will always make themselves available for each immunization session. The immunization must be compatible, feasible, accountable and more important acceptable by the community members. Every procedure must be explained to the caregivers. Effective health promotional activities must ensure.
