    The role of the Criminal Justice Officials in the Preliminary Inquiry Process of Diversion Programmes in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa . The basis of this research is the uncertainty of the decision-making in the preliminary inquiry process of diversion programmes. The study will investigate the role of criminal justice officials in the preliminary inquiry process of diversion programmes in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The study will also assess the factors that influence their decisions to establish whether the aim of the preliminary inquiry addresses the goal it was set to achieve. Focusing on Durban Magistrate Court and Ntuzuma Bridge City Magistrate Court at KwaMashu the study seeks to gain insight into how decisions are made to divert the youth in conflict with the law and assess whether the rights of these youth are protected during the preliminary inquiry proceedings. Criminal justice officials in South Africa play an important role in the preliminary inquiry of diversion programmes and this serves the interest of justice. Therefore, it is essential that exploratory research is conducted on decision-making process at the preliminary inquiry that involves the youth.
