Jenean Gilmer’s Updates

Community Archives & Collaboration

At the moment, I'm working on a project in relationship with the Sabathani Community Center in South Central Minneapolis, a historically black neighborhood struggling with food security and gentrification. I'm conducting research to build an exhibit and host a series of storytelling events in relationship with the Food Co-operative that opened across the street from the Community Center in 2016. We hope to draw attention to the ways that access to food has been constructed as a problem of the poor, rather than the failure of government and society to provide basic human rights to all people and to dispel notions of shame around seeking assistance. Moreover, the food Co-op has been shaped as a solution to the problem of food access in the neighborhood, but many who live nearby can't afford to shop there, and the Food Shelf run by the Community Center across the street remains under-resourced. I'm using formal archives to conduct much of the research, and over the summer will build on relationships in the community, and offer services that will provide space for people to add their own stories to the project--contemporary and past--in order to build an exhibit representative of and worthwhile to the whole community.
