Update 3: Collective Intelligence and where it can work for us in a World Language Course

My lens for all topics is either my world language courses or my two daughters and how their learning and lives can apply to these subjects. As I ponder collective intelligence, I immediately think of the many groupings I do in my courses for learning, for sharing, for critical thinking, and also for feeding off the passion or enthusiasm of others. I read the article below that states many situations in which collective intelligence are beneficial. I was very excited to see some of the same ideas above in the article. When I pair students during the reading of an authentic novel, I often pair students of the same level and then switch it up to pair them with differing abilities to enhance learning or share a passion from others.

Many days my students felt a sense of community or of belonging and a consisten theme among many pages and blogs focused on this topic. I would argue that many times the struggling student might find themselves feeling relieved or more at ease in a group working together and if done incorrectly they could slip throught the activities without adding to the work. However, I have discovered in even just one course that utilizes this grouping for an advanced text, the affective filter is lowered and I am surprised/delighted by the information that comes from every student to add to the discussion in the groups and on the projects.

Collective Intelligence

As I dove in further, I wanted to discover other activities in which others were using Collective Intelligence in their world langauge courses. I wasn't really successful in finding a specific activity but I did find many resources about the teaching of the 21st century skills and Collective Intelligence deriving from Collaboration. It is much like the above blog and article that discusses certain situations or problems when collective intelligence is useful and beneficial.

Look at the following infograph that discusses the skills:
