As Professor of History and African American Studies at UCLA, my work centers on race, gender, racial conflict, and the American South. I am a social historian by training, but have expanded my methodological process to include material culture, visual art, music and folklore. I hold a Ph.D. in History from Yale University and am an endowed professor in History at UCLA. My monographs include: Life in Black and White: Family and Community in the Slave South; The Contested Murder of Latasha Harlins: Justice, Gender and the Origins of the L.A. Riots; and What is Slavery? I currently am completing two books, one on the black slave family and the other on the black enslaved female. My work has been supported by several organizations including: the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation; the American Academy in Berlin; the Andrew Mellon Foundation; the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences (Stanford) and the National Humanities Center. I am a recipient of the Rawley Prize from the Organization of American Historians for the best book on reace relations in 2013; recipient of the Ida B. Wells Award by the Women's E-News Organization and the Gold Shield Award from UCLA.
