I am interested in the topics of capitalism, globalization, and the nation-state. I deploy interdisciplinary approaches combining insights from sociology, political science, economics, and history to examine the emergence of modern nation-states in a global capitalist system. In the field of history, I am interested in merging cultural, political, and diplomatic history as a way of exposing - and transcending - disciplinary biases and assumptions about what "culture," "politics," and "diplomacy" mean and how they work. My work thus seeks to integrate fields of scholarship that have traditionally not been communicating with each other. By interrogating the creation of modern nation-states and the capitalist world-system from multiple interrelated perspectives, I strive to provide a more detailed and integrated historical account of the driving mechanisms of contemporary globalization.
