Simon McIntyre was born in Wellington, New Zealand in 1955 and graduated from the University of Canterbury, Christchurch in 1977 (DipFA Hons). He later completed an MFA at RMIT University, Melbourne in 1999. He was included in the Young Contemporaries exhibition at the Auckland Art Gallery in 1977, and held his first solo exhibition in Christchurch the same year. Since then he has held over 30 solo exhibitions and been included group shows in NZ, Australia and Asia. Recent solo exhibitions include A Certain Kind of Light and The View From Here at Tim Melville Gallery, Auckland and State of Play at The Vivian, Matakana, NZ. In 2016 he curated an exhibition, Painting: a transitive space at ST Paul St Gallery, AUT University, Auckland which involved 25 artists, two iterations, artist forums and a supporting 80 page publication. He has been a Senior Lecturer in Visual Arts at AUT University for over 20 years and was Head of Department from 2006-2012.
