Theresa Deeney is Professor of literacy education, coordinator of the graduate literacy program, and director of graduate studies in the School of Education at the University of Rhode Island (URI). Her research focuses on pre- and in-service teacher education in literacy, and assessment and instructional practices for students who struggle. Her work has appeared in Assessment for Effective Intervention, The Reading Teacher, Journal of Special Education, Intervention in School and Clinic, Yearbook of the Literacy Research Association, and in volumes on clinical and best practices. Dr. Deeney is author of Improving Literacy Instruction with Classroom Research (2009), which guides teachers in investigating their own practices and features teachers’ own classroom research. Dr. Deeney has received several awards for her work, including the 2015 Jerry Johns Outstanding Teacher Educator in Reading award from the International Literacy Association, the 2015 Outstanding Service Award from the URI College of Human Science and Services, the 2014 Constance McCullough Award from the International Reading Association for professional development in Kenya as part of her work with the Africa Teacher Foundation, and the 2007 Outstanding Outreach award from the URI College of Human Science and Services for her work with urban teachers.
