Signal was born April 12, 1971 in Inglewood, California, but returned to New Orleans in 1974 where she lived until 2000. On a full academic scholarship, Signal majored in Spanish at Tulane University, receiving her bachelor of arts degree in 1993. She began working for the Tulane University office of development in 1996, and went on to complete her master of business administration degree with concentrations in marketing and management in 2000.
Signal is in her fourth year at the University of Nebraska Lincoln. Her teaching interests/focus include Communications Research and Strategy, Principles and Promotional Writing, Advertising and Public Relations Campaigns, and Race Gender and the Media. She has recently begun work on 'Nebraska's Partnership for Rural Entrepreneurship and Innovation', an interdisciplinary program that focuses on helping Nebraska's rural businesses and also to encourage more rural Nebraska entrepreneurs to remain in the state.
Professor Signal's research interests include communicating across cultures both inside and outside the United States; how to get more minorities into the advertising industry; teaching assessment and the scholarship of teaching; and the analyzation of racial ambiguity in the mass media.
Prior to joining UNL, Professor Signal worked for the Chicago National League Ball Club in the marketing department. She plans to begin work on her Ph.D. in Spanish this coming spring.
