  Sarah Franzen is an anthropologist whose research uncovers how rural African American communities negotiate with, resist, and transform the political-economic structures that dominate the Black Belt in the southeastern US. Franzen is currently a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Wolf Humanities Center at the University of Pennsylvania where she is focusing on the intersection of race, property, and kinship. Her PhD, completed at Emory University, focused on the community-based development efforts of a regional network of African American farm cooperatives, and explored how grass-roots institutions support sustainable livelihoods. Franzen also has an MA in visual anthropology from teh University of Manchester, and a BA from Colorado State University.
