I am an applied linguist interested in language and literacy acquisition in both English and the African languages, language teaching, language teacher training, early childhood education and the influence of language on concept development.I have published widely on these topics both internationally and nationally. I currently hold the Chair in Early Childhood Development and Education at North West University, South Africa. I have served on provincial and national language bodies in South Africa and am on the Editorial Board of the Cambridge journal, Language Teaching: Surveys and Studies. I am also on the British Association of Applied Linguistics' Special Interest Group for Language in Africa's committee as publications and journal officer. I was the co-editor for applied linguistics for the journal Southern African Linguistics and Applied Language Studies for a number of years. I have also published widely with my postgraduate students and my co-author for the present paper has just graduated with her doctorate. I believe in capacity-building, peer-collaboration and learning and learning from one's own learners.
