  I have been a faculty member at Northwestern Oklahoma State University since 1990. I have written or co-edited three books on the subject of African Americans in the American West. I have also published several scholarly articles on this topic and made several presentations at academic conferences. I regularly teach upper-division History courses on the American West, African Americans, Native Americans, and period courses from the late nineteenth century to the present. I have previously taught at the University of North Dakota, Eastern New Mexico University, and the University of Missouri-St. Louis. I am a former member of the city council of the town in which I live (Alva, Oklahoma)serving from 2009 to 2013. Besides African Americans in the American West, my research interests include African American athletes; my most recent journal articles are about African American rodeo performers, African American explorers, and black hockey players.
