Dr. Robert J. Bonk, the associate professor of professional writing at Widener University in Chester, PA, USA, has an eclectic background that melds writing and the humanities with the life sciences, particularly healthcare. A noted professional in the field of medical writing, he worked for nearly two decades in the pharmaceutical industry, culminating in his management of the writing, editing, and publishing functions of an international drug firm. Dr. Bonk is an active member of AMWA (American Medical Writers Association), for whom he has served as chapter president, committee chair, member of the executive board, and administrator of the 2008 annual conference. As a scholar, Dr. Bonk focuses his research endeavors on writing techniques in the areas of medicine and healthcare, as well as the contributions of humanistic perspectives to these areas. He also emphasizes academic service-learning in several courses, challenging students to apply their learning to the betterment of their communities. In 2007, he received the Clarence R. Moll Professor of the Year Award. His first book, Writing for Today’s Healthcare Audiences: A Primer on Research, Techniques, and Information, was selected for 1999 as one of the 250 best books in the health sciences.
