  As a PhD student in Anthropology and Science and Technology Studies at UC Davis, I have been working on the different ways air is understood as an object of science. My particular focus is on the relationship between instrumental and embodied ways of knowing air quality in London. My research looks at how people engaged in both institutional science and citizen science calibrate their response to often contradictory or inconsistent data produced by remote sensing, direct monitoring and their personal bodily experience. I have several years of filmmaking experience, as a cinematographer, a skill I use to further my research. I have been making short films to explore the ways that people engage with images of air. I investigate how images of air exploit historical forms of presentation, such as maps, forcing specific associations upon the object of air, particularly in terms of geographical location, permanence, and scale. I run workshops for graduate students on using film in the presentation of academic work, and plan to make a feature length film as part of my thesis presentation. Less

  My Digital Anthropology Masters focused on the social aspects of big data, social media, mass consumption and data networks. My dissertation looked at a set NASA images of nitrogen dioxide levels in the atmosphere over ten years. I critiqued the construction of these images as political objects and as instantiations or 'cuts', following Karen Barad, across a potential phenomenon.
