Prior to beginning his doctoral study in 2008, Philip held various leadership and administrative positions in Church run institutions in Papua New Guinea. Philip holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Anthropology and Sociology, Bachelor of Arts Honours degree in Cultural Anthropology, University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG) and a Master of Applied Anthropology and Participatory Development, Australian National University (ANU).
