Along with a general interest in African American history, his research has focused on photography, black masculinity, and visual culture. He is the author of "The Prince of Jockeys: The Life of Isaac Burns Murphy" (2013), the first definitive biography of this celebrated athlete, and editor of the forthcoming "Porter, Steward, Citizen: An African American’s Memoir of World War I" (2017). Dr. McDaniels has contributed essays to exhibition catalogs including "Leaving Mississippi: Reflections on Heroes and Folklore" (2014), "American Epics: Thomas Hart Benton and Hollywood" (2015), and "Without Regard to Sex, Race, or Color: The Past, Present and Future of One Historically Black College" (2015). His essays and exhibition reviews have also appeared in the International Review of African American art, Black Ball: A Negro Leagues Journal, and the Journal of Sport History.
