Holder of the Ph.D. degree in Sociology and Anthropology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Dr. Shifferd's academic specialties include the sociology of economic change, social stratification, and political sociology. Dr. Shifferd’s research and publications are in the areas of community power structures, large-scale social change, and the role of the arts in education and in community development. In 2005 she completed a study of the relationship of the arts to larger community structures in ten small Minnesota communities. The research, “Thriving Arts, Thriving Small Communities,” was commissioned by the with funds from the Bush Foundation. Her paper, “Converging Streams: The Community Arts and Sustainable Community Movements,” was presented at the Society for Human Ecology Conference in the Fall of 2006, and subsequently published by the Community Arts Network. It was also presented in the summer of 2007 at Walden University’s conference on sustainability in Minneapolis.
