  As a Nutritional Biochemist I have worked in a wide array of scientific areas that range from Human health and Human Ecology to Environment and Policymaking. I started my career as a scientific researcher conducting studies on iron metabolism, heavy metal contamination, obesity, inflammation and child growth but further on I had the opportunity to work in different areas that allowed me to expand my understanding and approaches to solve problems in Guatemala. My previous post as the Director of the Center for Atitlán Studies, lead me to work and live in the Western Highlands of Guatemala, one of the poorest regions of the country. During this time, I lead a multidisciplinary group of experts focused on studying the limnological, environmental and human dynamics of Lake Atitlán. This experience helped me understand the complexities of poverty and its impact on development, human wellbeing and environment. In my new position as a Consultant at the Sustainable Economic Observatory, I have the chance to influence key decision makers in Guatemala so they can build science-based institutionality and policymaking.
