The otherwise optimistic future outlook anticipated, as Africa being a rising continent, is threatened by a nexus of environmental problems across the Sub-Saharan Africa. Droughts and floods have caused the loss of at least 40% of lands which are no longer able to support crop production. In the Lake Victoria regions, 80% of lands are classified as non-productive. As consequences, there has been decline of yield and loss of 67% food total. In the Equatorial Forest regions, yields have slumped by 50%, with huge deficits in crop production. Conventional approaches have been promoted to help maintain productivity of ecosystems and enhancement of potential yields. However, an understanding of the cultural context of the local community is needed. In other words, these conventional approaches must be locally specific such that they relate to the local environmental context and are sensitive to local cultures and lifestyles. The local communities are embedded with their traditional knowledge and their cultural practices play a significant role in the conservation of the natural resources. Therefore, this research seeks to provide empirical evidence of the determinants and effects of cultural practices on environmental sustainability, with focus on the Sub-Saharan African regions.
