Michael Carroll is an Associate Professor in the Department of Architecture at Kennesaw State University in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. He is a graduate of both Dalhousie University (Halifax, Canada) where he earned his professional architecture degree and McGill University (Montreal, Canada) where he studied the history and theory of architecture. In Montreal, he was a founding partner of the design/build firm, atelier BUILD which was awarded the Canadian Prix de Rome of Architecture in 2004. A monongraph on the work of atelier BUILD was published in Spring 2010 by TUNS Press. Michael Carroll is a registered Canadian architect. Professor Carroll is the founder and director of MAT_Lab at Kennesaw State Unversity, a materials library, lab and exhibition space. His research focuses on materiality in contemporary architectue with an emphasis on performative facade systems. Other research topics of interest include engagement of under-represented social groups such as the LGBTQ+ community, the elderly, the disabled and the homeless and how architectural deisgn can address these groups and provide spatial configurations and material expressions that contribute positively to their identities and foster community well-being.
