Martin Winands studied Educational Science and Psychology in Bielefeld as well as Vienna from 2004 to 2009.
Until 2010 he was a Research Assistant at the Institute of Interdisciplinary Research on Conflict and Violence (IKG) at Bielefeld University. From 2010 to 2013 he hold a PhD scholarship at the Leuphana University of Lüneburg (project: Interactions of Football Fans).
Since 2013 he is a Research Associate at the IKG. Currently he and his colleagues conduct the two and a half-year ‘Bielefelder Fußballfan-Studie’ (Bielefeld’s football fan study). In 2014 he passed his PhD exam. Furthermore Martin Winands is one of the founders of the special group ‘football and conflict’ at the IKG which was established in 2013. Moreover he is as Lecturer at the Faculty of Educational Science at Bielefeld University.
His research interests are conflicts in football as well as socialization and right-wing extremism. In the past he and his colleagues at Bielefeld conducted an evaluation for the Hessian Football Association (HFV) at Frankfurt. Furthermore he belongs to the counsellor of the Socio-Pedagogical Fan Project Bielefeld. Additionally he has published several articles and given diverse talks within the scope of football science and research on conflict and violence.
